For the third year running, the U.S. State Department鈥檚 Bureau of Educational and Cultural Affairs has named Dartmouth a , placing it among the colleges and universities with the greatest number of students selected for the Fulbright U.S. Student Program.
Nineteen Dartmouth students and recent alumni were offered Fulbright awards for the 2024-25 academic year, and at least 12 accepted, with Dartmouth ranking 18th among universities and colleges nationwide.
To have Dartmouth named a top producer of Fulbright U.S. students for the third year in a row is 鈥渁 testament to the strength of our liberal arts education, our students鈥� expansive minds and career plans, and the many faculty and staff on campus who support them,鈥� says , assistant dean of faculty for fellowship advising. 鈥淥ur recipients this year span nearly every continent and range in focus from teaching English to researching textiles in Laos and working with HIV-positive communities in Fiji.鈥�
The designation clearly demonstrates Dartmouth鈥檚 鈥渄edication to promoting global engagement and mutual understanding between the people of the United States and the people of other countries,鈥� says Scott Weinhold, principal deputy assistant secretary for the Bureau of Educational and Cultural Affairs. 鈥淭his achievement is a testament to your institution鈥檚 deep commitment to international exchange.鈥�
The U.S. government鈥檚 flagship international academic exchange program, the operates in more than 160 countries, providing accomplished students, scholars, teachers, artists, and professionals the opportunity to study, teach, and conduct research abroad. Fulbright alumni have included 44 heads of state or government, 62 Nobel Laureates, 82 MacArthur Fellows, and 90 Pulitzer Prize winners.
Since the program鈥檚 inception in 1946, more than 285 Dartmouth applicants have received and accepted Fulbright awards.
Aditi Gupta 鈥�23, who is now in medical school, says she is 鈥渋ncredibly grateful鈥� for her experience as an English teaching assistant in Czechia, aka the Czech Republic, where she made lifelong connections with her Czech colleagues, students, and fellow Fulbrighters.
鈥淓very day became an opportunity for cultural exchange, from struggling to translate Czech groceries at the local market to celebrating American and Indian traditions with my host town,鈥� says Gupta, who also invited American scientists and diplomats to speak to her students.
鈥淚 apply my lessons in cultural exchange, humility, and empathy every day as a current medical student at WashU in St. Louis,鈥� says Gupta. 鈥淚 am further indebted to Christie Harner at Dartmouth, who guided my Fulbright applications and completely transformed my professional trajectory as a Dartmouth alum, Fulbrighter, and future physician.鈥�
This year marks the sixth time since 2009 that Dartmouth has been designated a Top Producing Institution of Fulbright U.S. Students.
