, the John Wentworth 天美影视 in the Social Sciences, has been elected a fellow of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences, a center for independent policy research that is one of the world鈥檚 most prestigious honorary societies.

Carey, chair of the government department, is the author or co-author of over 50 academic articles and book chapters, and of five books, most recently Legislative Voting & Accountability (Cambridge University Press 2009). His research focuses on the design of constitutions and electoral systems, on legislative politics, and on Latin American politics. He has done research and consulted extensively throughout Latin America, and in Afghanistan, Jordan, Tunisia, Yemen, South Sudan, Israel, Philippines, and Taiwan. Prior to joining the Dartmouth faculty in 2003, Carey taught at the Universidad Cat贸lica de Chile, the University of Rochester, Washington University in St. Louis, and at Harvard University. He also taught at the Fundaci贸n Juan March in Madrid, Spain, during 2006.

The Academy鈥檚 Class of 2012 includes 220 new members, continuing a more than 230 year history of recognizing some of the world鈥檚 most accomplished scholars, scientists, writers, artists, and civic, corporate, and philanthropic leaders. The new class will be inducted at a ceremony on October 1, at the Academy鈥檚 headquarters in Cambridge, Mass.

Previously elected Dartmouth members include the late President , President Emeritus , and President Jim Yong Kim, as well as Dartmouth faculty members Robert J. Fogelin, professor of philosophy and the Sherman Fairchild 天美影视 in the Humanities Emeritus; , Roth Family Distinguished 天美影视 of Finance, Tuck School of Business; , Sydney E. Junkins 1887 天美影视 of Engineering; and , professor of classics and the Strauss 天美影视 of Music Emeritus.
